Tempe-based Chaco Flaco finds niche in canned cocktail market with all-natural ingredients

Chaco Flaco started in co-founder Chuck Moore’s Tempe kitchen in 2012, when the mixologist and bar manager would make margaritas in his blender at home and sell them in empty milk jugs. Fast-forward to 2021 and he and his partner, Steve Cislaw, have cornered the canned cocktail market, launching in AJ’s Fine Foods in May and throughout the Southwest, California and Colorado later this year. We’ll be sipping the refreshing, ready-to-drink strawberry daiquiri all summer.

Chaco Flaco is Taking Over the Canned Cocktail World

For years, flavored seltzers have dominated the RTD market. But the allure of low-calorie, low-ABV, mild-tasting drinks is fading. As the world re-opens after COVID-19 and a year of making their own drinks at home, people are looking for bold, spirit-focused drinks that offer the same convenience as a seltzer.

Enter: Chaco Flaco, award-winning craft cocktails in a can. They’ve taken what seltzers started, and evolved the RTD space with their high-quality, full-flavored drinks that are easy to incorporate into any beverage program.

CANNED COCKTAIL REVIEW: CHACO FLACO

Happy Friday cocktail lovers! This week I’m trying the full lineup from Chaco Flaco and I’m super excited about it partly because I love the branding so much and partly because these are made with real liquor!! Not flavored wine or beer or malt beverage. Real vodka, real tequila, and real rum! They are already winning in my book!!

And that branding! Everything about it makes me happy. The colors, the details, the little skeleton guy telling me to “just chill & serve.” Perfection! This brand is checking all of my boxes so far. So let’s pop ’em open and see how they taste.

Memorial-Day-Phoenix

20 places to celebrate Memorial Day in Metro Phoenix

Ditch your White Claws this year– we’re leveling up. Sip poolside with an emerging titan in the canned cocktail industry. Chaco Flaco’s are flavor-first craft cocktails in a can that are all-natural, dairy-free, contain no HFCs (high fructose corn syrup), and are lower-calorie, low sodium, and lower carb. The best part of all of that? The flavor wasn’t sacrificed for those bonuses. The first three sparkling Chaco Flaco flavors are a strawberry daiquiri, a smoky habanero mango margarita (you can actually taste that the habanero was fire-roasted), and a vodka berry mule. Chaco Flaco is available in AJ’s Fine Foods, Whole Foods, and Bashas for $14.99 for a pack of 4. Local restaurants including The Local (Chandler), The Porch (Tempe/Arcadia), Handlebar Diner (Eastmark, Mesa), and La Cocina (Central Phoenix) also carry Chaco Flaco.

4 Phoenix companies are raising the bar for cocktail mixers

Chuck Moore’s entrepreneurial days started in 2012, when he was a bar manager at Dos Gringos in south Tempe. Many of the margarita mixes on the market were filled with sugar and artificial flavors. So at home, he experimented on his NutriBullet, creating a healthier, all-natural version with fresh oranges and limes, and Stevia. His coworkers and customers loved his homemade margarita mix, which he named Chaco Flaco — Chaco was his nickname and “flaco” means skinny in Spanish.

I’ve heard several people call The Parish’s Bloody Mary one of the best one in town. It’s a bold statement for a bold drink.

They use a local Chaco Flaco drink mix — which kicks up the spice — and serve the drink iced in a salt-rimmed glass with house-pickled okra.

“Tacos Chiwas has become a hangout for local chefs, and the food is incredible and the owners are great people,” said Szabo, former head chef at Match Cuisine & Cocktails in Phoenix’s Found:Re Hotel. “I told Armando that I would love to start this Go Fund Me, and help (him) with costs to replace whatever he needs… because that is what community is all about.”

Also, Adam Allison of Tempe drink mixer company Chaco Flaco is encouraging people to come into Tacos Chiwas for Taco Tuesday on March 21.

Meet Chuck Moore of Chaco Flaco Drinks in Tempe

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Chaco Flaco Drinks story. Tell us more about the business.
Together, our team at Chaco Flaco has created what we’ve been told is the best-tasting line of drink mixers on the market. Our point of pride is that our mixers are all-natural, gluten-free, non-GMO, Kosher, dairy-free, and contain no HFCs. Each one is low calorie, low sodium, and low carb and uses only natural sugars. We proudly introduced to the world the OG Margarita, the 4 berry mint cucumber Mojito, the Forbidden Horchata, Dr. Skin and Bones Pina Colada, the Strawberry Bandita, Bloody Maria, and her sister with an attitude Verde Maria (one of the first-ever bottled green bloody mary), We worked our butts off on the business side of matters starting off at local farmer’s markets.

Friday Foodie Inspiration: Chaco Flaco

Not just for drinks!

chacoflacoAlthough Chaco Flaco is the perfect complement to your margarita or mojito, it can be used for so much more. We’ve iced up some into little mojito popsicles and most recently we decided to make some pulled chicken with the margarita flavor. It was simple to do and made my dinner plans super simple. All I did was heat up my pan with some oil and a clove of smashed garlic. Once the pan has heated up and the garlic is fragrant I threw some chicken thighs in their skin down and browned each side. My last step was pouring in enough Chaco Flaco Margarita to almost cover the chicken. Sit back and let them beauties simmer.
